[Gyeongju Sightseeing] Danseoksan (Mt. Danseok , 경주 단석산)

As the highest point in Gyeongju, Danseoksan (Mt. Danseok) is called the ‘roof of Gyeongju.’
The imposing features of the mountain are beyond compare.
In the springtime, travelers come to Danseoksan to enjoy the sight of azaleas in full bloom along the ridgelines.
The name ‘Danseok’ originated from a story about Kim Yushin.
When he was 17, as he was disciplining himself on this mountain to develop the power to achieve unification of the three kingdoms, he encountered a Buddhist priest named Nanseung.
Nanseung handed a precious sword to him and, with this sword, Kim Yushin split a rock next to him as if cutting through a block of tofu: hence the name ‘Danseok (cutting rock).’
This was the place where hwarang (youth of the Silla dynasty who excelled in beauty, bravery, and military arts) such as Kim Yushin cultivated and trained themselves.
The jagged rocks bring to mind the story of Kim Yushin splitting the rock. With each step, visitors can enjoy the sensation of becoming a hwarang dashing over the mountain trails on a galloping horse.
