Travel to Gyeongju - overnight Gyeongju trip on a trail consisting of tourist attractions representing Gyeongju

The recommended trail I’ll introduce this time is overnight Gyeongju trips consisting of tourist attractions representing Gyeongju.

‘Gyeongju’… I regard it as my second hometown. It’s hard to sightsee all the places in Gyeongju on an overnight trip, but I made a plan focused on places that make you feel Gyeongju’s attraction.

Gyeongju trip trail (overnight): Bulguksa and Seokguram – Folk Craft Village and Silla Arts and Science Museum – Bomundanji travel – Gyeongju city night tour(Anapji Pond) – Daereungwon(Cheonmachong)and Gobungun nearby – Cheomseongdae and Wolseong – Gyeongju National Museum - Yangdong maeul

I’d like to recommend this trail especially for visitors new to Gyeongju. And the above trail plus the climb on Mt. Namsan called Bomulsan is the ‘two nights and three days’ Gyeongju trail.

One day trip trail: Bulguksa and Seokguram - Folk Craft Village and Silla Arts and Science Museum - Bomundanji travel - Gyeongju city night tour(Anapji Pond)

The first destination: Bulguksa and Seokguram

Bulguksa and Seokguram, the most famous destinations in Gyeongju, are the World Heritage and must-go places.

# the World Heritage Bulguksa

Inside Bulguksa, The stone pagoda Dabotap and Seokgatap face each other.

Bulguksa has many stories including sad legends about Seokgatap and spectacles as well.

Quoting the hidden spectacles professor Yu Hong-jun who introduced in the program of One Night and Two Days.

# Daeungjeon Somaetdol: corner line a little rising at the point
# Jahamun eave ornaments: each is curved in the opposite direction
# Yeonhwagyo and Chilbogyo: clearly left lotus pattern ornaments
# stonework of Bulguksa: leaving the lower stone as it is by applying to the curve of natural    stone with the upper carved and trimmed

If observing Bulguksa, looking for these hidden spectacles, you will have a more fun and meaningful trip.

The second destination: Folk Craft Village and Silla Arts and Science Museum

If you go to Sillayo Pottery in Folk Craft Village where the efforts are always being made to reproduce Silla pottery, you can see the sign, ‘Come and see.’

Sillayo Pottery’ is the place I’d like to recommend rather than the Silla Arts and Science Museum in Folk Craft Village.

When entering Sillayo Pottery, a senior kindly explained Silla pottery and let us have a chance to see him make the pottery in person.

What’s more, there are a kiln and shop, behind the workplace.

# Silla Arts and Science Museum

Silla Arts and Science Museum taught us how amazing the cultural heritage Cheomseongdae and Seokguram are scientifically.

Silla Arts and Science Museum is located in Folk Craft Village which is near Bulguksa. That’s why I recommended this trail as an overnight route.

The third destination: Bomundanji travel

Bomundanji has many accommodations such as hotels and membership resorts clustered along the Bomunho Lake. In particular, it has the most beautiful view in spring when cherry blossoms come out.

The pictures I took along cannot show everything, but in Bomundanji, there are many attractions such as Gyeongju World, Gyeongju World Culture EXPO Park, Shilla Millennium Park, a theme park of hot air balloons, the Teddy Bear Museum, and BomunHerb Theme Park.

The fourth destination: Gyeongju city night tour

When the sun sets, the night tour of Gyeongju city is quite worthwhile to catch.
Dongbusajeokjidae, Cheomseongdae, and Anapji Pond where Gyeongju’s best night view can be seen are recommended short trails.

# Dongbusajeokjidae and the night view of Gyerim

# the night view of Cheomseongdae

# the night view of Anapji Pond

Anapji Pond has a more beautiful view reflecting from the lake at night than during the day, as it is teeming with rape flowers in spring and lotus flowers in summer, which attracts many tourists.

Two-day trip trail: Daereungwon(Cheonmachong)and Gobungun Tomb complex nearby – Cheomseongdae and Wolseong – Gyeongju National Museum – Yangdongmaeul (Yangdong Folk Village)

The first destination: Daereungwon(Cheonmachong)and Gobungun Tomb complex nearby

Next day, let’s get started with sightseeing to noted remains in Gyeongju city.

The first place is Daereungwon where Cheonmachong is, and nearby there are Geumgwanchong introduced in the program of One Night and Two Days and Bonghwangdae, the largest ancient tomb in Korea.

The second destination: Cheomseongdae and Wolseong

You passed by this place, enjoying the night view the previous day, but if you revisit this, you will have different feelings. The trail goes like this: pass by Cheomseongdae of Dongbusajeokjidae, enjoy the scene of Gyerim for a moment, then climb up to in Wolseong to see Seokbinggo and descend.

It won’t take much time because there is nothing much to see and no exhibition space.

# Wolseong (Banwolseong)

# Seokbinggo

The third destination: Gyeongju National Museum

In fact, if you want to know about Gyeongju, Gyeongju National Museum is the first place to visit, which is comprised of Archaeology Hall, Art Hall, Anapji Hall, and Special Exhibition Hall. So, take up enough time to look around slowly, please.

The fourth destination: Yangdongmaeul in Gyeongju

Just like Andong has Hahoemaeul, Gyeongju has Yangdongmaeul. Personally I like this destination most, and visit with my acquaintances once or twice a year.

Yangdongmaeul in Gyeongju has the largest scale and the longest history among traditional folk villages, which is the representative clan village Banchon in Korea led by Gyeongju Gyeongju Son ssi and Yeoju Lee ssi. It has over 500 years of tradition. It was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage along with Andong Hahoemaeul in 2010.

Information about accomodations

Because I usually use membership resorts in Gyeongju, I don’t know about accommodations in detail but my rough guess is as follows.
If alone, you should use jjimjilbangs(Korean dry sauna) or guest houses; if you are in a party of two or more, membership resorts of Bomundanji Complex or motels. And it is a great experience to stay one night in an old house.

Information about food

The places I’ve known are as follows, but besides that, Gyeongju has many other venues full of food such as Ssambapjip near Daereungwon Tomb Complex, restaurant providing rice wrapped in greens, and Cheonnyeonhanu, restaurant providing barbecued Korean beef.

# Seongdong Market before Gyeongju Station

The Seongdong Market has restaurants with rich food available for 5,000KRW and street vendors with Korean snack food such as Tteokbokkgi, Sundaes, and Odeng.

# Tteokgalbi jeongsik(Tteokgalbi table d'hote)

You see restaurants withTteokgalbi jeongsik on the way to the Folk Craft village. I think its taste is good enough to be recommendable.

# Soft tofu in Gyeongju

I think the most noted food in Gyeongju is soft tofu. Bukgundong has a lot of soft tofu restaurants some of which even ask you to line up to wait for the food.
